hearts: from alicia

16 Oct

I was delighted to get a photo in my inbox from one of the attendees at the Purple Lights Ceremony. Alicia took her heart and hung it on a paperbox on campus at WSU-V. Thanks, Alicia!

hearts: from derrick & kurt

15 Oct

Recently we spent an afternoon with Derrick and Kurt, a delightful couple from California. They have been together just shy of 20 years. They are also one of the lucky couples that got to marry legally, in 2008, before Prop 8 passed.

Derrick and Kurt love to play tennis together, so they hung a couple of hearts at the park in North Hollywood where they play tennis weekly. Thanks for bringing Love is a Radical Act to California!

front page news

15 Oct

We’re super excited to be on the front page of today’s paper talking about marriage equality and Love is a Radical Act. This Saturday’s installation up in Olympia (and Sunday in Seattle) will be our biggest action before the election. Thanks to everyone for supporting those who engage in the radical act of love.

upcoming installations: seattle & olympia

10 Oct

We are excited to announce our first out-of-town installations! We will be in Olympia on Saturday, October 20, and Seattle on Sunday, October 21. Please join us!

As always, we stand for families and loving relationships of all kinds, but we are especially interested in promoting marriage equality during these installations, especially in Olympia, the heart of Washington politics and law.

custom hearts

4 Oct

We had a request about making custom hearts, so we worked out the details and would like to share them with everyone.

We are using a vintage cookie cutter to cut out these hearts so we can assure a uniform size that will fit the decals. The hearts are just under 3″ tall. The text area is about 1.5″ wide and can accommodate 4 lines of text. As you can see above, between 10 and 20 characters can fit in a line, depending on if you are using a wide letter like capital M or a narrow letter like lowercase i.
You can order hearts with a custom message for $3 each (plus shipping if necessary). As always, the funds we raise selling hearts and other art will help keep this project going. Contact us at loveisaradicalact (at) gmail (dot) com to discuss details. As always, we have our regular hearts for sale and would love to see them pop up all over the place. Thanks!

P.S. The quote on the example in the photo is from the decision on the 1967 Loving v Virginia case. The decision affirms that marriage is a basic civil right and rightly calls out anti-miscegenation laws as racist. It also gives a sweet but not-too-sentimental definition of marriage: “Marriage is a coming together for better or for worse, hopefully enduring, and intimate to the degree of being sacred.”

installation event: love art gallery

We appreciate the warm welcome we got on Saturday at Love Art Gallery, both from owners Ruby and Ted and from the artists and community members who stopped by. We also appreciate the live music that was provided by Andrew Grade.

installation event: uptown vancouver

3 Oct

What a lovely turnout on Friday for our first proper installation event. The community in downtown/uptown Vancouver is very strong and supportive, and we felt it as folks took hearts and hung them all over. Once again, a big thanks to our friend Anni for being our photographer for this event. And, of course, a big thanks to those who participated.

hearts: from erin

Love Art artist Erin came by our installation event yesterday at the gallery, and later on took this photo of her family. It is accompanied by this message:

Here is our favorite Family, hanging ceramic hearts in their tree in support of Love Is A Radical Act. Seven hearts now hang celebrating all kinds of families and love! Today, at Love Art! Gallery, MANY people hung little red ceramic hearts to participate in our belief in the love of all….and the belief that marriage must be available legally for every couple, regardless of sexual orientation. We stand fully for the legalization of same sex marriage. We stand fully for Love. ♥

Local artist Jennifer says, “20 years of marriage is a radical act of love.” So true.
