domestic violence awareness month at ywca

15 Oct

Earlier this month, we were invited to pass out hearts and share about Love is a Radical Act at the YWCA as part of their Purple Lights Ceremony, an event that raises awareness about domestic violence in our community and beyond. We were happy to share the message that with all of the hurtful relationships out there, we should always celebrate all families that are truly loving and supportive. Please, if any of your relationships are hurtful, do what needs to be done to fix it or leave.

We appreciate the warm welcome we got on Saturday at Love Art Gallery, both from owners Ruby and Ted and from the artists and community members who stopped by. We also appreciate the live music that was provided by Andrew Grade.

installation event: uptown vancouver

3 Oct

What a lovely turnout on Friday for our first proper installation event. The community in downtown/uptown Vancouver is very strong and supportive, and we felt it as folks took hearts and hung them all over. Once again, a big thanks to our friend Anni for being our photographer for this event. And, of course, a big thanks to those who participated.

Love Art artist Erin came by our installation event yesterday at the gallery, and later on took this photo of her family. It is accompanied by this message:

Here is our favorite Family, hanging ceramic hearts in their tree in support of Love Is A Radical Act. Seven hearts now hang celebrating all kinds of families and love! Today, at Love Art! Gallery, MANY people hung little red ceramic hearts to participate in our belief in the love of all….and the belief that marriage must be available legally for every couple, regardless of sexual orientation. We stand fully for the legalization of same sex marriage. We stand fully for Love. ♥

Local artist Jennifer says, “20 years of marriage is a radical act of love.” So true.

“love is a radical act project” by ponyboy press

21 Sep

Local zinester PonyBoy Press wrote this beautiful post about Love is a Radical Act and her thoughts about her own relationship. An excerpt:

“My partner of nine years was with me. He is a true and trusted partner. He’s my best friend. I so relate to what Sam wrote above about how the romance that most people think is so important is actually just an illusion. That idea actually belittles the true real love of everyday kindness and partnership. That is what I have with my partner.
We don’t live together, we aren’t married, but we have a strong equal partnership and his love and friendship has changed my life so much for the better.  Some people have and will dismiss our relationship, but it is strong and just as valid as any other couple or family who love and care for each other every day.”
Check out the full post for more from PonyBoy Press and some lovely photos at the beach.

Local artist Maria bought some hearts to (he)art bomb the home of a special family: Ian, Jessie, Harry, and Rosemary. Unfortunately, Harry had to spend his sixth birthday this past weekend in the hospital because he has been recovering from being hit by a car. While the past couple of months have been hard and sometimes scary for Harry and his family, there has been an enormous outpouring of love and generosity from the community to support these kind folks.

Happy birthday, Harry! You are lucky to be loved by so many people.

mini (he)art bomb: uptown mural

18 Sep

Okay, maybe one heart does not a bombing make, but we’ll overlook that. Kelly wanted to combine Love is a Radical Act with a very special mural that a bunch of community members painted this summer as an act of love for one particular community member. This is a great example of love outside of the traditional family unit – love as a means of building strong community where everyone can depend on each other for help. Call it what you will, it’s a beautiful thing.

Note: the heart has already migrated to somewhere else, which is all part of the vision for this project. We hope to hear where it ended up.
